Schattenwurf  is usually used to describe the shadow cast by physical structures, whereas in this work, “shadow” often represents noise. Different structures and densities evoke different shades of shadow. For example, the scordatura of the string instruments creates natural white noise, and the extended techniques of various instruments blend to form multiple layers of noise. Here, shadow is no longer seen as a negative concept, but rather as a form of sonic aesthetics.

Schattenwurf wird normalerweise verwendet, um den Schatten zu beschreiben, der von Objektstrukturen geworfen wird, während in diesem Werk 'Schatten' oft für Geräusche steht. Durch unterschiedliche Strukturen und Dichte werden unterschiedliche Schattenfarben dargestellt. Zum Beispiel entsteht durch die Skordatur der Streichinstrumente natürliches weißes Rauschen, und verschiedene Instrumente vermischen ihre erweiterten Klangfarben, um unterschiedliche Ebenen von Rauschen zu erzeugen. Der Schatten wird nicht mehr als negativer Begriff betrachtet, sondern als eine Art Klangästhetik.
